Discipleship vs Membership….from Deidre Harris, Stewardship Chairperson January 2014
Not too late to join the pledge campaign for our 2014 fiscal year. This year's theme is The Giving Tree. Please click here for a pledge card and bring to church on Sunday!
This past fall I attended a stewardship retreat that was held by the Diocese at Camp Mokuleia. It was a weekend that brought stewardship chairs from different Episcopal churches from around the state to talk about stewardship in general and strategies for the pledge drive. One talk by the Bishop was particularly intriguing. The focus was on stewardship as a transformation into discipleship versus membership. This idea was so powerful for me that I began to research it further, and here is what I’ve come away with:
Stewardship really is a transformation from membership to discipleship. It is a dynamic on-going connection to a community of faith that struggles to discover what it means to follow Jesus in the here and now. And although every church has members, what we really strive for is more disciples.
