Lenten Calendar Project - Counting Our Blessings
When you come to church over the next few Sundays, you will see what looks like Chinese take out boxes at the greeters table. Please take one, but don’t look too hard for any good food in there, as you will be the one to fill it up!
St. Timothy’s has invited St. Nicholas to join them in a Lenten discipleship of counting our blessings. A calendar for the full season of Lent (from Ash Wednesday on March 5 through Easter on April 20) has been provided. On some days, we are asked to read a passage from the Bible. On other days, we are asked to “count our blessings” in a variety of ways. For example, count all the books in your house, count all the years of education you have had, count all the canned goods in your house. For each item you counted, you are asked to put a coin in the box. The coins can be any denomination – for every book, you might put a
penny per book. For every year of education, you might drop in a quarter. If you don’t like coins, you are also welcome to use bills! (You are also welcome to just keep a running tally, and then write a check at the end of the season. You will also be able to make your final donation on line using our Easy Tithe giving tool).
At the end of the calendar, we will each turn in our boxes and the funds will be used to buy backpacks. Then, before school starts in the fall, a call will be made for supplies needed to fill those backpacks. A ‘backpack stuffing’ party will be held and all the filled backpacks will be distributed to schools in our community. St. Nicholas will be choosing a school in the Kapolei region.
St. Tim’s has been doing this for a few years and reports that the schools are extremely grateful for this ministry, as there are always children who cannot afford all the supplies required at the start of each year. So, join in on counting our blessings, as we in turn, use those blessings to bless others in our community. Mahalo!
